History & Architecture of the Building

St Mary's is a Grade 1 listed building. The most complete online account of the history and architecture of St Mary's that we know of was written by David Nash Ford, a noted local historian, though curiously it is published on a website for American tourists! The University of London also hosts a thorough history of Old Basing, including an extensive history of St Marys, with material not covered in Nash-Ford's account. The UL article includes a useful, 19th century map of the church showing the various ages of the stonework. It's not a very clear map, relying on B&W shading and made worse by digitisation. Therefore we have worked the wonders of PhotoShop on it to put it into colour and hopefully make things clearer. We cannot guarantee that we interpreted the original 100% accurately so don't take this as an authoritative, historical document!

There is a comprehensive visitors' guide available in the church in the north aisle. It is an attractive, 18-page, full colour guide to the history and architecture of the building, price £3 payable in the honesty box. You will also find a selection of colourful greetings cards, postcards and bookmarks for sale.
